About the game

Go, or Weiqi, is an ancient board game of territory: players alternately place stones to enclose more empty points than the opponent. Despite simple rules, its strategy is bottomless.

How to play

Place a stone on an empty intersection; surrounded stones are captured. The game ends when both pass, and the larger territory wins.

Tips & strategy

['Play on the third line early to balance influence and territory.', 'Maintain eye-space so your groups cannot be captured.', 'Trade small territory for central influence.']

Advanced guide

Go strategy is about balance. Open on the third line to stake efficient territory while keeping options for influence, and always secure two 'eyes' for any group so it can never be captured. Trade local points for a strong overall position rather than grabbing every corner.

History & origins

Go is over 2,500 years old and is considered one of the deepest strategy games ever devised.
